If your toddler is anything like ours, they are fascinated by the mysterious little mushrooms that pop up in the yard after a rainy day. Fungi feel a bit like nature's magic trick, and today, we are going to teach you how to perform a magic trick of your own.
Making a mushroom spore print is one of the easiest, most rewarding screen-free activities you can do with a curious toddler. It bridges the gap between science and art, requires almost zero prep, and results in a beautiful keepsake you can hang on the fridge.

What is a Spore Print?
Mushrooms don't have seeds. Instead, they reproduce by dropping millions of microscopic "spores" from the gills underneath their caps.
A spore print happens when we capture those falling spores on a piece of paper. Because different mushrooms have different colored spores; ranging from bright white to rusty brown, pink, or even purple, the resulting print can be facinating to look at.
What You Need

A mature mushroom: You can use a safe, store-bought mushroom (like a large Portobello, Cremini, or Shiitake). If you forage one from your backyard, always supervise closely and remind toddlers that wild mushrooms are for looking, not tasting!

Paper: White or black paper works best. (Pro tip: Spores can be light or dark, so taping half a sheet of black paper to half a sheet of white paper guarantees you'll see the print regardless of the spore color).

A glass bowl or cup: Large enough to cover the mushroom cap.

Hairspray (Optional): To seal the print when you're finished.
How to Make Your Print
1.Prep the Cap: Adults only for this step.
Carefully pop or cut the stem off the mushroom so that the cap can sit perfectly flat against the paper. The gills (the little ridges underneath) need to be facing down.
2.Place the Mushroom:
Have your toddler gently place the mushroom cap, gill-side down, onto the paper.
3.Cover It Up:
Place the glass bowl upside down over the mushroom. This forces the mushroom to drop its spores and stops drafts of air from blowing the microscopic spores away as they fall.
4.The Waiting Game: 2 to 24 hours.
This is the hardest part! Leave the bowl alone. To keep your toddler occupied while you wait, cozy up and read some of our favorite children's books to pass the time.
5.Reveal the Magic:
After a few hours, have your toddler carefully lift the bowl and lift the mushroom straight up. A beautiful, intricate pattern will be left behind on the paper!
6.Seal It (Optional):
Because spores are basically just dust, they can smudge easily. Spray a light, even coat of aerosol hairspray from about a foot away to seal the artwork. This step can be tricky and only needed if you are displaying long term not under glass.
Growing Together: From Spore Prints to Foraging
Making spore prints with your toddler is just the beginning. Nurturing this early fascination with fungi can actually blossom into an incredibly fun, shared hobby as they grow.
As your child gets older, you can begin reading real foraging field guides together to learn how to safely identify wild mushrooms. Over the years, backyard "looking" can turn into actual family hikes where you forage edible varieties, like Morels or Chanterelles, to bring home, clean, and cook up together for dinner. It’s a wonderful way to connect with the earth, teach them where their food comes from, and bond over a shared love of nature.
